My new favourite medium for drawing and art is the graffiti pen. Graffiti pens go hand in hand with both street art and amateur art; they’ve become easily adopted as a favourite tool for artists due to how easy they are to use and how incredible they look on all surfaces. Many amateurs and professionals consider this marker pen as an indispensable tool for creativity and self-expression.

I personally love them because they work on most surfaces! In fact, POSCA (the most renowned graffiti pen supplier) guarantee their markers to work on wood, fabric/textiles, skin, ceramic, glass, paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, mineral (rocks etc) and canvas. Their reversible nibs and replaceable tips make them easier to use, more cost effective and less messy than spray paint.

If I haven’t convinced you yet, here are some techniques that you can try with graffiti pens:

1. Mixing: As the markers use proper paint, you can mix colours on the surface you’re using. If your pen nib gets another colour on it, simply wash it with water and prime the paint again.

2. Layering: The paint is fast-drying, which is effective for layering. You can even layer light colours over dark!

3. Blowing: This creates that traditional, “spray paint” look (kind of speckled). You just need to blow on the pen nib. Just not too hard!

4. Gradients: The paint in graffiti pens is water soluble, so you can water it down while it’s wet to create a more “watercolour” effect.
