Brazil’s presidential runoff brings the Amazon’s future into focus

Brazil’s presidential runoff on 25 October will carry consequences beyond its borders, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and challenger Flávio Bolsonaro offering different approaches to the Amazon.
The rainforest is a major regulator of the global climate. El País describes a choice between continuing Lula’s efforts to reduce deforestation and Bolsonaro’s proposals to loosen environmental restrictions in support of development and landowners.
The issue also intersects with who can reach the ballot box. The Associated Press reported that federal prosecutors and Indigenous advocates are seeking urgent action to help people in remote Amazon communities vote.
Their requests include transport assistance and support at polling places. Some communities face journeys lasting several days, making participation difficult without practical help.
Indigenous territories play an important role in preserving forest, while decisions made in Brasília affect international efforts to limit deforestation.
El País reported that forest clearing fell substantially during Lula’s current administration, contrasting with increases under former president Jair Bolsonaro, the challenger’s father.
The result will determine Brazil’s environmental direction for the next presidential term. Before that, electoral authorities face the immediate task of helping remote communities participate.
