Summers in India are harsh for the skin due to heat, humidity, pollution, and UV exposure. Indian skin is more prone to pigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so washing and sunscreen alone may not suffice. The article outlines six summer skin concerns and expert solutions from Dr. Aisshwarya Panddit.
- Tanning is common because higher melanin activity makes Indian skin prone to uneven tone and dullness. Prevention centers on broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, applied every morning and reapplied when sweating or outdoors. Physical protection such as hats, sunglasses, and scarves also helps reduce tanning.
- Pigmentation issues, including acne post-inflammatory marks, melasma, freckles, and dark spots, tend to appear darker in summer and can be harder to treat. Use sunscreen as a first step; lightening ingredients (niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid, kojic acid) may help but should be used with caution; avoid unsupervised potent peels or steroids.
- Breakouts rise due to sweating, excess oil, sunscreen buildup, pollution, and thick skincare products that clog pores. Regular cleansing with a mild cleanser twice daily helps maintain the skin barrier; over-cleansing can worsen oiliness. Choose lightweight moisturizers and non-fragranced sunscreens during hot weather.
