Economic modelling and evaluation to support future mental health reforms

Thumbnail
The National Mental Health Commission has commissioned Monash University to conduct the most extensive economic modeling and evaluation of mental health interventions ever performed in Australia. This initiative aims to understand the financial implications and effectiveness of various mental health support services.
  • The project will focus on a broad spectrum of mental health interventions, from early intervention and prevention programs to acute care and ongoing support. Researchers will analyze data to quantify the costs and benefits associated with these interventions, considering factors such as improved health outcomes, reduced disability, and increased workforce participation.
  • A key objective is to provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and service providers to optimize resource allocation and enhance the impact of mental health spending. The evaluation will examine both the direct costs of delivering services and the indirect economic benefits derived from improved mental well-being across the population.
  • The study will employ sophisticated economic modeling techniques to project long-term outcomes and assess the return on investment for different mental health strategies. Findings are expected to inform future policy development and investment decisions aimed at strengthening Australia's mental health system.
