UK Proposes Law Banning Mobile Phones at Schools in England

Thumbnail
The UK government is implementing a nationwide ban on mobile phone use for students in schools across England. This move aims to formalize existing guidance and reduce the excessive time young people spend on their devices. The policy seeks to improve classroom focus and address concerns about the impact of social media on students.
  • The ban will extend to all schools, including primary and secondary institutions, and will come into effect from the start of the next academic year. Headteachers will be empowered to set their own policies on how the ban is enforced, with schools able to decide whether to confiscate phones or require them to be left at home.
  • Existing guidance already advised teachers to ban phones during class time and in school canteens. However, this new legislation will make the ban mandatory across all school settings during school hours. The government stated the primary motivation is to curb cyberbullying, improve student concentration, and reduce distractions in educational environments.
  • This policy is a response to growing public and political pressure regarding the negative effects of screen time on children's mental health and academic performance. The Department for Education has emphasized that the ban is not intended to be punitive but rather to foster a more focused learning atmosphere.
