Former Collingwood players Héritier Lumumba, Andrew Krakouer and Leon Davis have reportedly cut all ties with the Collingwood Football Club. The old teammates had been in a fifteen month dialogue with the club to address a number of racist instances documented in the 2021 Do Better report, which found the AFL club guilty of systematic racism.

Quoting testimonies given by staff, players, and supporters, the report found that the Magpies' response to racist incidents was "at best ineffective, or at worst exacerbated by the impact of the racist incidents".

The Do Better report included 18 proposals for tackling the club's culture, all of which Collingwood agreed to put into effect. One of these was to "develop a strategy to address and reconcile past acts of racism" that did not punish those who spoke out.

However, Lumumba revealed in a tweet that he and his other teammates didn’t feel that enough had been done. His tweet reads:

"It is our firm belief that the Collingwood Football Club has no intention of acting in good faith to achieve a just outcome for past players who have experienced racism at the Club.”

Lumumba played 10 AFL seasons with the Magpies, and has spoken in the past about his time at the club, including when he openly called out the club president for racist remarks directed at First Nations player Adam Goodes. He revealed that he felt that he couldn’t speak up, for fear of losing his spot on the team.
