If you’re an avid NBA fan, you’ll no doubt be familiar with this legendary sporting team. The Boston-based professional basketball team was formed in 1946 and won it’s first NBA title in championship in 1957, after coach Red Auerbach acquired phenomenal centre Bill Russell. The team holds their home games at TD Garden, which they share with the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins.

The Celtics are considered to be one of the most successful NBA basketball teams. They’ve won a total of 17 NBA Championships (the only other team to equal this feat is the LA Lakers) and at this time they’ve recorded the most wins of any NBA team. Because if this, the Celtics have a significant rivalry with the LA Lakers, which was at its peak in 60s and 80s. In fact, during the 1980s, the Celtic player Larry Bird and Lakers player Magic Johnson, had a feud that lasted nearly a decade. The two teams have played each other in the Championship finals 12 times, with the Celtic winning 9 times.

Four of the most well-known Celtics players are Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Larry Bird and Dave Cowens, and between them have won the NBA MVP award 10 times.

The team’s name, as well as their mascot “Lucky the Leprechaun”, come from Boston’s Irish American History.
