A paint marker is essentially what the name implies: acrylic paint in the form of a marker. They’re permanent on most surfaces and give you better control than you would with a paintbrush. This creates a neater finished look, and opens many possibilities for experimental effects.

Here are some techniques that you can try with a paint marker:

• Layering – Paint markers are ideal for layering one colour on top of another, as they dry fairly quickly. Make sure you do this once the paint is dry (the colours will blend if you try it wet).

• Blending – Even though paint markers are quick-drying, you can blend colours together while the paint is wet. If your pen nibs get soaked with another colour, simply wash them under a tap.

• Outlines – Paint markers are perfect for outlines, as the pen allows you greater control for a straighter, neater line.
