Daft Punk was a French electro- music duo formed by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter in 1993. In 1997, their debut studio album “Homework” was released, with popular songs “Da Funk” and “Around The World” topping charts. In 2001, their second album “Discovery” furthered their rising fame, featuring jumping tracks like “One More Time: and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”. This was the dawn of their trademark vocoder sound; the unique element to their music that captured the world. They combined elements of house music with funk, techno, disco, hip hop, indie rock and pop, making them one of the most influential dance music acts in history.

The duo toured from 2006-2007 and won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2007. Due to their space-age aesthetics and futuristic sound, they were brought on to compose the soundtrack for Disney’s Tron: Legacy. They released their fourth album, “Random Access Memories” in 2013, which won 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year. They were setting the standard for dance DJ-ing, and many artists aspired to be like them.

Daft Punk also left us another strange legacy, in the form of a conceptual film, “Interstella 5555”. The movie was a collaboration with Japanese director Kazuhisa Takenouchi, and has a cult following to this day.

Daft Punk have no doubt set the bar high for any future generations of EDM. Their departure from the music scene in 2021 is sad loss to electronic music.
