Australia has a rich sporting history and culture, with many sporting heroes still revered today. Here are 5 of the greatest Australian athletes:
1. Dawn Fraser is an Australian champion swimmer, and a household name for many Australians. She won the 100 meters freestyle Olympic event 3 times: in 1956, 1960 and 1964.
2. Rodney George (Rod Laver) is an Australian former professional
tennis player and holds the record for most singles titles won in the history of
tennis. He is the only
tennis player to win two Grand Slam singles titles (the first in 1962 as an amateur and the second in 1969 as a professional player).
3. Sir Donald George Bradman (colloquially referred to as “The Don”) is an Australian
cricket legend, widely recognised as the greatest test batsman of all time. To put into perspective how remarkable this
athlete was, Bradman averaged over 60% higher than the next best test batsmen in the history of
cricket.
4. Herbert James (also known as Herb) Elliott is a former Australian runner. He is renowned as one of the greatest middle distance runners in the whole world. He remained reigning champion of the 1500m and 1 mile race for the entirety of his career.
5. Heather Pamela McKay is an Australian squash player and is deemed by many to be the best female player in the history of squash. She won 16 consecutive British Open championships between 1962 and 1977, which is still the current squash world record.
