Should You Sign Up For A Team Sport As An Adult?

Being involved in team sports as a kid is definitely a kind of rite of passage. Many parents understand the importance of physical activity in their children’s development; it keeps them fit and healthy, teaches cooperation and provides them with a fun outlet for all their energy. It’s often hard to get away from sport as a kid, however when we start growing up, sport as a teenager seems more focused on the “athletic kids” who want to play professionally or earn scholarships. By the time we’re adults, many of us stop playing team sports altogether. There are responsibilities, careers, relationships, and sport is often not a priority.
This is a bit of a shame, as there are many physical, mental and social advantages to being involved in team sports as an adult. Dr Fraser Carson, a lecturer at Deakin University, says that “There is considerable evidence to show recreational activity can improve your time management skills, boost confidence, increase discipline, stabilise emotions, and alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Even an hour a week can really help.”
What we need to realise as adults is that it's not all about winning or being the best – it’s about connection with your team. Finding a new group of friends and overcoming fear of judgement can really improve your overall wellbeing. And you can get fit and boost your mental health at the same time – there are really no downsides!
