The Trump administration has launched "Operation Economic Outcast," an aggressive economic campaign aimed at isolating Iran from the global economy. This initiative, described as an "economic D-Day," targets the financial networks and revenue streams that support Iran's government, military, and security apparatus. The U.S. is leveraging sanctions to pressure governments, banks, and companies engaging in business with Tehran, signaling a departure from previous "managing the threat" strategies to actively "ending it."
- The campaign's primary objective is to cut off all economic lifelines to the Iranian regime. This involves a "zero-leakage approach" to thwart oil smuggling and sanction evasion, with the Treasury meticulously mapping Iran's financial networks. Countries and entities involved in facilitating Iran's trade and financial activities face U.S. sanctions, with a warning that the window for compliance will be brief. The administration is targeting five key sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.
- Over 60 entities, individuals, and vessels are being sanctioned for their alleged roles in Iran's procurement of nuclear and missile technology, cyber operations, and oil revenue generation. Bank Melli, Iran's largest commercial bank, is specifically targeted, with a call for its branches to be shuttered. Entities involved in money laundering for Iran risk exclusion from the U.S. dollar system. While the U.S. is not immediately imposing all sanctions to avoid disrupting the global financial system, it is giving countries and institutions an opportunity to cease problematic activities. Iran has vowed retaliation against the U.S. sanctions, warning of consequences for cooperating countries.
