Why Skyrim Is Still Popular 15 Years On

Skyrim is an action role-playing game that took the world by storm when it was released in 2011. Despite it’s well known (and often hilarious glitches), this game broke sales records and won countless awards. You might be wondering why an 11 year-old game still has such a dedicated fan base, and why people are still playing it. Here are five reasons for Skyrim’s popularity (and why you should pick up a copy!):
1. The modding community
Skyrim is known for it’s gorgeous aesthetic, but it also has an infamous and very active modding community. If you play the game on PC, you can install mods that enhance the graphics, add new gameplay mechanics and even create new questlines! This keeps the game feeling fresh.
2. There’s so much to explore
Not only is the map huge, but the open-world style and crazy amount of character customisation allows for endless different ways to play the game. Various quests have different outcomes depending on your choices.
3. The voice acting is an absolute pleasure
Did you know Christopher Plummer voices one of the characters? The voice acting is always on point (and often hilarious) in Skyrim, and you’re always hearing NPCs say new things.
4. The music is gorgeous and timeless
Jeremy Soule’s Skyrim soundtrack is a masterpiece, plain and simple.
5. The lore and worldbuilding
The lore of the Elder Scrolls games is so in-depth that multiple books have been written about it and online fans are still arguing over the Nine Divines theology and Stormcloak vs Empire politics. Though the lore is rich, this shouldn’t deter new players – it’s easy to pick up and understand.
