Sit/Stand desks (also known as standing desks) have become a popular
office addition in the last decade or so. As many of us are finding ourselves working in progressively more sedentary jobs, a focus on the
health and
wellbeing of those who need to sit all day for their work has become a priority. Perhaps you’re feeling the effects of sitting down all day. Maybe you feel like you can’t concentrate for long periods of time or you’re experiencing aches and pains from constant sitting. A
standing desk might be the solution!
It's a pretty simple idea: a
sit/stand desk means that you can move between standing and sitting while still getting your work done. There are many kinds of styles and functions: some are designed so that the whole desk moves up and down and others are made as a small workstation that sits on your desk and moves your computer up and down.
There are many benefits to using a
standing desk, including reducing aches, pains and office-related injuries, burning calories, preventing weight gain and encouraging weight loss, boosting mood and increasing energy levels, supporting productivity and creativity and lessening the risks of heart attacks and strokes. Dr Francisco Lopez Jimenez, during a recent
standing desk study (European Journal of Preventive Cardiology), said that “based on the result of our study, standing for sure burns more calories than sitting, and the reason is that the number and volume of the muscles that an individual uses [while] standing are higher than sitting.”
