According to CoreLogic, the median rent across Australia sits at $476 per week ($492 per week in capital cities and $441 per week in regional areas).

With rent prices on the rise, you might be considering relocating to a cheaper city. Here are the average rent prices per week for four capital cities in Australia, the two cheapest and the two most expensive:

1. Adelaide – $430 per week (Cheapest) The top spot goes to Adelaide as the most affordable city to rent in Australia. It’s a drastic difference to the most expensive city’s median rent – nearly $200 per week in fact. Properties in Adelaide have a median rent of $448 per week for houses and $365 per week for units.

2. Melbourne – $444 per week (Second Cheapest). Melbourne, surprisingly, comes in second, with a median rent of $482 per week for houses and $413 per week for units. However it’s important to take into consideration that the cost of living in Melbourne is astronomically high – it’s in the top 10 most expensive cities to live in in the world.

7. Sydney – $582 per week (Second-Most Expensive) Sydney comes in second-last with a median weekly rent of $582, with $646 per week for houses and $518 per week for units. Sydney, like Melbourne, also has a high cost of living, making it the most un affordable city in Australia.

8. Canberra – $620 per week (Most Expensive) Canberra takes the last spot, as the most expensive capital city for renters in Australia. Canberra has a median weekly rent of $620, with houses at $668 per week units at $521 per week. Cost of living in Canberra is relatively low, but a good chunk of your budget will be spent on rent.
