Strong, fast-moving thunderstorms impacted the Piedmont region on Monday afternoon, bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph and frequent lightning. The National Weather Service issued alerts warning drivers and residents of the potential hazards associated with these severe weather conditions.
  • Fast-moving thunderstorms, characterized by wind gusts reaching 50 mph and frequent lightning, swept through the Piedmont region on Monday afternoon. Doppler radar indicated a solid line of storms moving northeast, affecting counties including Granville, Durham, Franklin, and Wake. Commuters faced sudden heavy rain, sharp crosswinds, and the risk of falling tree limbs.
  • The NWS Raleigh office issued a Special Weather Statement at 1:39 p.m., noting the storm line was progressing northeast at approximately 30 mph. The alert specifically warned of gusty winds capable of knocking down tree limbs and displacing unsecured objects. Key affected areas and highways were identified, including I-85, I-440, and I-540, all vulnerable to reduced visibility and strong crosswinds.
  • Drivers were advised to reduce speed, use headlights, and avoid flooded lanes. Safety recommendations from the NWS included seeking shelter in sturdy buildings, avoiding trees, open water, and metal objects during lightning activity, and waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going outside. Homeowners were cautioned to secure loose outdoor items.
