Stress Less: How To Relieve Stress At Your Desk

Have you noticed yourself feeling stressed at work? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and trapped, and stress can be detrimental to your physical and mental health. Many office workers are impacted by stress, but how can we relieve stress and feel calm at work? Here are a few quick ways to relieve stress that you can try at your own desk:
Deep breathing exercises – When you’re stressed, your breathing can become shallow and constricted. Take some long, deep breaths. Try breathing in for four counts, holding your breath for four counts, then breathing out for four counts. This simple exercise can help slow your heart rate, clear your mind and relax your muscles.
Stretches – There are stretches that you can do even while sitting at your desk. Try gentle neck rolls, stretching your arms straight up in the air, flexing your feet and wrists and twisting from the waist. Do these kinds of stretches at least once an hour.
Visualise something peaceful – It sounds silly, but it can really help! Picture your favourite place, whether it’s at home reading a book, on a beach or out in nature.
Go for a walk – Stretching your legs and getting some fresh air does wonders for boosting your mood. Even if it’s just 5 minutes, your body and mind will thank you!
Turn the lights down – Bright lights in the office (or even from your computer screen) can be a stress-inducing factor. If you can, take a few minutes to turn off all the lights and close your eyes. This will prevent eye strain and help you feel calm.
Remember that these are simply quick fixes. If your feelings of stress aren’t going away, you may want to consider some lifestyle changes and/or professional help.
