A 65-year-old male patient with end-stage heart failure and severe pulmonary edema, who could not lie flat or even speak comfortably, has successfully returned to daily life. This was achieved through the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) at Incheon Sejong Hospital, followed by rehabilitation.
- The patient, identified as Mr. Park, collapsed while hiking and was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction, leading to rapid heart failure progression and pulmonary edema. Due to his critical condition, he was transferred to Incheon Sejong Hospital with a pulmonary drainage tube, as other institutions deemed further treatment difficult.
- The medical team opted for LVAD implantation, a mechanical pump supporting the heart's function, after concluding medication alone would be insufficient. The LVAD aids in pumping blood from the left ventricle to the aorta.
- Despite initial concerns about carrying the device's battery and controller, Mr. Park proceeded with the surgery on his family's recommendation.
- Post-surgery, his pulmonary edema resolved, and his condition stabilized, allowing for discharge after intensive care and rehabilitation. This treatment highlights a multidisciplinary approach involving cardiology, thoracic surgery, critical care, infectious diseases, and rehabilitation medicine.
