UK approves Jackdaw gas project amid climate debate

The UK government has approved the Jackdaw gas project in the North Sea, advancing a development at the centre of debate over energy security and climate policy.
The decision was announced on 21 October. Government officials argue that domestic production can support supply security and employment while lower-carbon energy sources expand.
Reuters reported that production could increase domestic gas output by around six per cent at its peak, with the field operating for up to 11 years.
The approval concerns development consent under an existing licence. It is distinct from issuing a new exploration licence.
Environmental scrutiny has included emissions from the eventual use of the gas. The government said it considered additional information submitted following guidance on assessing those emissions.
The decision does not resolve the separate application for Rosebank.
Jackdaw now moves forward while the wider debate continues over how much fossil-fuel production is compatible with Britain’s climate commitments.
