Vising the Great Wall of China is something you can’t miss on your China holiday. Here are some travelling tips to keep in mind when stopping at this remarkable landmark:

• There will be massive crowds. At any point on the wall, in any weather, at any time of the day. The further you climb, however, the fewer the crowds, so save your main photos for then.

• Go in spring or autumn. There are less crowds, and you beat the summer heat and winter frost.

• You might not be able to see as far as you’d like. Although China has been (slowly) putting in measures to reduce pollution, visibility isn’t great most days.

• Wear walking shoes. This may seem obvious, but I saw a lot of tourists in inappropriate footwear complaining about their feet. The wall is ancient, and the pathways are cobbled and uneven. Add in the steep, winding staircases at the towers, your feet will thank you for wearing joggers!

• Some of the sections are restored, and some are wild and overgrown. I would recommend taking a tour guide with either option – the overgrown sections are easy to get lost in! Take into account your physical fitness, as much of the wall is an uphill climb.
