Three Republican senators joined Democrats in voting for an amendment to prevent Bill Pulte from temporarily serving as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) while also heading the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The amendment, which failed, aimed to prohibit Senate-confirmed heads of other agencies from acting as DNI.
- The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), failed on a 49-49 vote. Senators Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski expressed concerns about Pulte's qualifications and questioned if he possessed a security clearance, given his background in homebuilding and lack of apparent intelligence or military experience.
- Democrats are particularly displeased with President Trump's selection of Pulte, citing his use of his FHFA role to investigate individuals involved in legal disputes with Trump. This discontent has led to threats from Democrats to block an extension of FISA Section 702 surveillance authority in protest. Some Republicans have also indicated they would oppose Pulte if nominated for a permanent DNI position, emphasizing the need for extensive national security experience.
