I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2004, meaning that I’ve lived with the disease for nearly 18 years. Type 1 can be a pain and often inconveniences me in my daily life. Something I have noticed, however, is the massive leaps in insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology in the last few years. Here are some of my favourite new devices for managing Type 1 Diabetes:

• Omnipod 5 – Formerly known as the Horizon, this is one of the most exciting advances in T1D technology that I’ve seen in my lifetime. The Omnipod 5 is a closed loop system, known as Artificial Pancreas technology. It connects the Omnipod tubeless patch insulin pump to a CGM with an algorithm, allowing for automatic insulin dosing adjustments. This device has taken decades to perfect, and is about a close to a real pancreas as you can get!

• Tandem Diabetes Care – This app gives you the ability to bolus using your smartphone, something that hasn’t been FDA approved up until recently. So far it is only compatible with the t:slim insulin pump, however more apps in development to pair with Medtronic devices.

• T:sport mini pump – This device from Tandem is a micro-pump hybrid; it’s about half the size of the t:slim X2 pump and has no display screen. The t:sport will have an adhesive part, but also the t:slim’s trademark t:lock connector “pigtail” insulin tubing that attaches to the infusion set for insulin delivery.
