It’s the greatest feeling when you can finally go outside without a jacket and sleep at night without ten blankets! When summer is just around the corner, you eagerly await the beach days, the weekend barbeques, the pool parties and the relaxing afternoons in the park. However, the increased sunlight does have it’s downside; you’re more at risk of
skin cancer. But this doesn’t have to ruin your summer! By taking some simple precautions, you can stay
sun smart and safe while still having a great time. Here’s a checklist to keep in mind:
1. Always wear sunscreen – Even on overcast days, UV rays can damage your skin. In the sun, it can take as little as 10 minutes for the skin to burn. Wear an SPF50+ daily; there are many types and brands that suit all skin types.
2. Check the UV Index – This will give you a good idea of which times of the day are more dangerous so you can plan your activities accordingly.
3. Cover up – This is the easiest way to protect your skin. Cover your shoulders and upper thighs as much as you can, and invest in a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck. If you need to be in a bikini/swimming costume, try to find shade as much as possible.
4. Sunglasses – These aren’t just a fashion statement – sunglasses protect your eyes from macular degeneration which can be caused by too much sunlight.
5. Shade – It can be tempting to try and get a trendy beach tan, but being in direct sunlight for too long will result in painful and itchy sunburn. Set up a beach tent or sit under a tree. Your skin will thank you!
