How Sport Climbing Became A Must-See Olympic Event

On August 2nd - 4th, the International Olympic Committee assembled in Rio de Janeiro and formally recognised the addition of Sport Climbing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This was an exciting decision for fans of the sport. Sport Climbing is exciting to watch, and a total of 40 athletes (20 female and 20 male) competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Sport Climbing in the Olympic Games is made up of three disciplines: Speed, Boulder and Lead. The rules for each discipline are as follows:
• Speed climbing - This is the first event. It consists of two climbers racing up a 95 degree sloped, 15-metre-high wall. The first climber to reach the top is the winner. This sport is exhilarating to watch, as climbers can often scale the wall between 5 and 10 seconds.
• Bouldering - The second event is just as exciting as speed climbing, as the climbers don’t use a safety harness. The wall is 4 metres high, and each climber has only 4 minutes to climb each of the 4 routes. The routes are difficult and require a certain amount of problem solving skills.
• Lead climbing – The final event has athletes climb a 15 metre wall. They have only 6 minutes, and if they fall, their climb is finished. Their top height is recorded as their score. This event is often gruelling and exhausting.
The scores from all three disciplines are added to create the athlete’s final score.
