We all know that our day-to-day choices affect our overall
health and
wellbeing. Looking after your heath in a holistic way can increase life expectancy, reduce risks of chronic diseases and boost your mood and energy. It can, however, be hard to stay motivated or keep up healthy habits. Here are some small steps you can take that will ultimately lead to a healthier you:
1. Set small goals – This is one of the biggest issues when changing your lifestyle – many people try to do too much at once, become overwhelmed and then quit entirely. Choose a smaller goal. Maybe instead of completely cutting out sugar, you can focus on simply cutting out soda? Instead of aiming for a gym workout every day, try 3 times a week.
2. Consider the obstacles – There will be hurdles as you try to change your habits. By thinking of them beforehand, you’ll be able to anticipate and recognise them when they happen.
3. Find ways to overcome your obstacles – Do you only have sugary snacks in the house? Add 10 healthy things that you love eating to your shopping list. Don’t have time to exercise? Set your alarm 20 minutes earlier in the morning.
4. Write down a routine on a large whiteboard – Our bodies and minds love routine and consistency. Having it written down will give you visual cues and keep you on track.
5. Plan to reward yourself when you achieve goals – This really helps with motivation. It doesn’t have to be elaborate – for example, if you go a week without eating take out, treat yourself to a bubble bath or manicure.
