Cryptocurrency has taken the world by storm. It’s a fairly new form of
digital currency and has gained traction in many communities and industries. It’s gotten so big that not too long ago, the first rehab centre for
cryptocurrency addicts was founded in the UK. This was met with bemusement and scepticism in the crypto community, however more and more hospitals have been following suit. It does beg the question - is
cryptocurrency addiction a real problem that people are having to deal with?
It's unclear as to exactly how many people in the world have invested in
cryptocurrency, but a survey of the USA population estimates that about 26million people in the US have invested. It’s safe to say that crypto
addiction could theoretically impact hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide. Even more concerning, it’s been found that dipping your toes into the
cryptocurrency market can give a similar adrenaline rush that
gambling addicts experience.
Cryptocurrency addiction needs to be recognized and treated just as seriously as
gambling addiction. So what are some signs of
cryptocurrency addiction?
• Social life suffers – This is one of the first signs of a
gambling addiction, and crypto
addiction is much the same. Keep an eye on whether events are missed and sufferers become withdrawn and isolated.
• The feeling of not being able to stop – This includes investing
money that you don’t have or can’t stand to lose, spending more and more time trading and taking bigger risks with
money.
• Withdrawals – This can include feelings of anxiety, nervousness and panic if you’re not trading. Withdrawals can also have physical effects, like sweating and shaking.
• Hiding your trading habits – Including trading at night or going somewhere secret.
If you or a close friend or relative is struggling with
addiction, don’t hesitate to reach out and get help.
