Office Space is truly a 90s classic, and despite its aged technology, everything about this film could be made today and still be unnervingly relevant.

After a therapeutic hypnotization, harangued office drone Peter stops stressing about his job and becomes chill. This results in him having the confidence to ask out the girl working at the café next door and committing some white collar crime.

The themes of this movie are both nihilistic and stoic. If you just relax for a second, you can work out what you really want; but in the end none of it matters anyway. Some elements are really modern as well; the comedy is quite offbeat and the juxtaposition of the office setting with cheesy 90s rap gives Office Space a timeless quality.

The struggle of the working class desperados speaks to me; the characters feel like they could be plucked from a million different offices around the world. There were many times while watching this film that I, a self-professed office drone, thought “oh no, this is too real”.

This also synergizes with the dark humour. After getting fired, one worker tries to kill himself, but ends up winning a 7 figure settlement after getting hit by a drunk driver. He is shown covered in plaster with a giant grin. Sure you might not walk again, but you also don’t need to work either.

It reminds me of a news post I saw the other day of a grinning woman in a hospital bed, as her student loans had been cleared after being hit by a bus on campus.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
