Refresh And Revitalise - Ways To Improve Your Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene. We hear the phrase a lot these days, and for good reason! Good sleep hygiene simply means putting yourself, mentally and physically, in the best position and mindset to sleep well every night. Many of us suffer from bad sleep hygiene, and I’ll be the first to admit that I am one of the worst offenders. Sleep is so important to our overall health and wellbeing, so I’ve compiled a list of tips that have helped me in establishing good sleeping habits:
1. Create a bedtime routine – It sounds like something you’d do with your kids, but I’ve found this so helpful in making sure I get a good night sleep. I personally have a set bedtime (or close enough) and try to stick to it. Our bodies love routine and consistency.
2. Make your bedroom ideal for sleep – For me, that means no electronics (I’m a chronic offender for checking my phone at all hours of the night). Leave your phone in another room and get an old school alarm clock. Make sure light and sound is minimal – invest in some blackout blinds or noise-cancelling headphones. I also try to make sure that my bedroom is neat before I turn in for the night – this makes me feel relaxed and able to fall asleep better without clutter or mess stressing me out.
3. Get a good mattress and pillow – You spend a third of your life sleeping, so it’s important to invest in good quality products. A good mattress and pillow will keep you comfortable and prevent aches and pains.
4. Practice mindfulness – I often struggle with racing thoughts right before I fall asleep. Practicing mindfulness helps calm these thoughts. Use a meditation app or write your thoughts in a notebook beside your bed – whatever works for you!
5. Focus on diet and exercise – Not getting enough exercise, eating too much sugar/caffeine/alcohol and eating right before bed can severely impact your sleep hygiene. Chat to your doctor about creating healthy diet and exercise habits.
