Turkey's trade deficit significantly narrowed in September 2026 compared to the previous year, primarily due to a substantial increase in exports. This improvement, however, did not meet preliminary expectations.
- Turkey's trade deficit decreased to $5.16 billion in September 2026, down from $6.96 billion in September 2025. Exports surged by 15.3% year-on-year, reaching $25.97 billion. Key contributors to export growth included precious stones and metals, electrical machinery, and mineral fuels. Significant export increases were observed in trade with Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Imports saw a more modest rise of 5.6% to $31.13 billion. The primary drivers for increased imports were aluminum, copper, and organic chemicals. Major import growth originated from China, the United States, and Italy. For the January–September period of 2026, the cumulative trade deficit expanded to $70.97 billion, an increase from $67.16 billion recorded in the same period of 2025.
