Another One Bites the Dust: Volkswagen Kills The Manual Transmission

Thumbnail
Volkswagen is discontinuing the manual transmission option for the Jetta GLI starting with the 2027 model year, shifting to an exclusive seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. This decision follows similar eliminations for the Golf GTI and Golf R, leaving the Jetta GLI as the last North American VW to offer a manual. The company cites shrinking global demand as the primary reason, despite acknowledging the loyalty of manual transmission enthusiasts.
  • The 2026 model year will be the final opportunity for buyers to purchase a new Volkswagen with a manual transmission. Despite this change, the Jetta GLI will retain its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, indicating no significant mechanical alterations are expected. The pricing for the 2026 manual and DSG versions is identical at $35,040. While the DSG offers faster shifts and potentially better performance, many enthusiasts value the engagement of a manual gearbox. Alternative manual options in the compact sport sedan segment are becoming scarce, with the Honda Civic Si remaining manual-only and the Subaru WRX and Hyundai Elantra N also offering manual choices.
